While AI is being heralded as a revolutionary technology set on improving the lives of users, it also brings up ethical concerns, such as environmental destruction, the indiscriminate theft of art, massive restructuring of the labor system, the push for AI technologies in all sectors of society, and more. The rollout of AI technologies is framed as “inevitable,” making us feel as if we have no choice but to go along with the crowd. At the same time, we recognize that many of these issues are not new. How can we look to lessons from community organizers and feminist scholars to make informed and empowered choices for ourselves and our communities?

In this workshop, we will explore what is new about this current landscape and what’s not. What are some hard-won lessons from community organizing, environmental justice, legal theory, and feminist scholarship that we can implement in our individual and collective approaches to AI? Participants will leave this workshop feeling hopeful and with a sense of agency to engage, disengage, or resist AI in the face of the presumed “inevitability” of this new technology.
