This book club is for those interested in understanding the intersection of motherhood, race, class, and gender, while critically examining how societal structures and systems of power shape experiences of birth and parenthood. Whether you are a parent, a birth worker, an activist, or someone with a deep interest in reproductive rights. Together, we’ll read, reflect, and challenge the dominant frameworks around birth, mothering, and reproductive justice.

For the first meeting, we will read Of Woman Born by Adrienne Rich. This classic feminist text examines the institution of motherhood vs. the experience of mothering, critiquing how patriarchy has shaped the way society views women's bodies and roles. RSVPs welcome.

This book, and those that follow, highlight the necessity of addressing both the personal and political aspects of reproductive justice and provide a view of how systemic inequalities shape birth experiences.

Why now?

At a time when reproductive rights are under constant threat, understanding the systems of oppression and the histories that shape them is essential. These readings will provide not only a critique of these systems but also the foundations for envisioning and creating a more just world where all parents can thrive. They will explore some of the roots of reproductive injustice and discuss ways to reclaim power over our bodies and birth experiences. By connecting the personal with the political, these readings urge us to build communities rooted in care and liberation.
