Hiring the 2018-19 FRI Creative Team

The Feminist Research Institute is hiring our 2018-19 Creative Team. If you are passionate about feminism and creative media-making, we want to hear from you! We are hiring four budding creative professionals to help us in making feminist research accessible and applicable to broad audiences. Opportunities are available for students working in video, audio, graphic, and spatial media. All team members can expect to have vibrant conversations about how to apply feminist theory and principles in their work. We hope that this will provide team members with an experience in actualizing feminist theory and practice that will carry into their future. Applications will be accepted through Sept 17th.
 
Video Production Assistant (STDT3)
 
Job Description
The Feminist Research Institute (FRI) seeks a student to film and edit short videos on feminist research. This person will work with a team to create 5-10 minute films that teach key feminist concepts in an engaging and approachable way. UC Davis feminist research projects will be the basis for these films. Work will involve initial conceptualization, filming interviews and events, story boarding, editing, and uploading to online platforms. Work will take place within a team that combines creative, technical, and academic expertise.
We encourage applicants with interest and expertise in feminism and feminist research. This is a fantastic opportunity for a budding feminist filmmaker to put their training into action. We will also be hiring two other positions to create podcasts and illustrations. This means that you will be part of a cohort of creative feminist media producers.
Job duties:
  • Work with a team on film conceptualization, story boarding, and scripting
  • Film all footage for videos
  • Edit footage using Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Upload films to YouTube
  • Take photographs at events
  • Potential to experiment with animation
This position will be approximately 10 hours per week, and is expected to last through the academic year.
 
Qualifications:
Familiarity with filming best practices for interviews (use of filming technology, white balancing, framing, sound, etc.)
Familiarity with good photography practices
Editing capabilities in Adobe Premiere Pro
Ability to follow directions and adhere to deadlines
Ability to work well as part of a team
Interest in feminist research and feminism
Experience with animation is a plus

Duration: 9 months
Pay: $11.25/hour

Podcast Production Assistant (STDT3)
 
Job Description
The Feminist Research Institute (FRI) seeks a student to create podcasts on feminist research. This person will work with a team to create 10-30 minute podcasts that explore feminist research and its broader applications. UC Davis feminist research projects and leading feminist scholars will be the basis for these podcasts. Work will involve initial conceptualization, recording interviews and events, story boarding, editing, uploading to online platforms, and writing accompanying notes. Work will take place within a team that combines creative, technical, and academic expertise.
We encourage applicants with interest and expertise in feminism and feminist research. This is a fantastic opportunity for a budding feminist media maker to put their training into action. We will also be hiring two other positions to create videos and illustrations. This means that you will be part of a cohort of creative feminist media producers.
Job duties:
  • Work with a team on podcast conceptualization, story boarding, and scripting
  • Recording all audio
  • Edit audio 
  • Upload podcasts
  • Extract audio from video
  • Create musical interludes using open-source music
 
This position will be approximately 10 hours per week, and is expected to last through the academic year.
 
Qualifications:
Experience with music production and recording technologiesFamiliarity with principles of audio recording and sound
Editing capabilities in Adobe Audition, Garage Band, and/or Audacity
Ability to follow directions and adhere to deadlines
Ability to work well as part of a team

Illustrator and Graphic Designer (STDT3)
 
Job Description
The Feminist Research Institute (FRI) seeks a student to craft creative illustrations and graphic designs about feminist research and make promotional materials for events. This person will work with a team to create visuals that explain feminist research and its broader applications. UC Davis feminist research projects and FRI-sponsored projects and events will be the basis for the creative representations. Work will involve initial conceptualization, drafting, crafting a final product, digitizing, uploading to online platforms, and writing accompanying notes. Work will take place within a team that combines creative, technical, and academic expertise.
We encourage applicants with interest and expertise in feminism and feminist research. This is a fantastic opportunity for a budding feminist visual artist to put their training into action. We will also be hiring two other positions to create videos and podcasts. This means that you will be part of a cohort of creative feminist media producers.
Job duties:
  • Work with a team on illustration conceptualization
  • Engaging in creative 2D practice that represents feminist research
  • Create final products that adjusts with feedback
  • Digitize and upload final productions
  • Work with video producer and podcast producer as needed
  • Create promotional materials (fliers, online announcements) for events/programming
 
This position will be approximately 10 hours per week, and is expected to last through the academic year.
 
Qualifications:
Experience in 2D visual creation and graphic design
Proficiency in InDesign, Illustrator, or other design softwares
Ability to follow directions and adhere to deadlines
Ability to work well as part of a team
Interest in feminist research and feminism
Ongoing artistic practice preferred

Event and Sustainability Designer (STDT 3)
 
Job Description
The Feminist Research Institute (FRI) seeks a student to help us put on creative, intellectual, and sustainable events and spaces. This person will work with a team to create event and working spaces that express our feminist values, which includes exemplifying an ethics of care for our environment and fellow humans. Events will include small, one-hour gatherings and large symposia. You will get to help with conceptualizing an event design that complements the theme, event planning such as booking a location, catering, room setup, decor and registration, and coordinating with the FRI team to ensure vibrant attendance. We anticipate that this person will also be a key player in helping us design a new flexible workspace for the Feminist Research Institute that enables us to host feminist scholars, projects and events, showcase feminist art and research, and embody principles of creative reuse. Work will take place within a team that combines creative, technical, and academic expertise.

We will also be hiring three other positions to create videos, podcasts, and illustrations to complement events and programming.   • Event planning including booking, catering, room setup and registration
  • Identification and use of local resources for sustainable practices that prioritize reuse
  • Conceptualization of event design
  • Document design processes 
  • Work with video producer, podcast producer, and illustrator as needed
  • Assistance with event and space promotion
 
This position will be approximately 10 hours per week, and is expected to last through the academic year.
 
Qualifications:
Experience in event planning (including student-run events, informal gatherings, and activist projects)
Proficiency in event and spatial design
Knowledge of sustainable design and local resources for sustainable practices
Ability to follow directions and adhere to deadlines
Ability to work well as part of a team
Interest in feminist research and feminism
Familiarity with campus booking and catering preferred
