Feminist Foundations

For filmmaker Gargi Sen, feminism provides a lens through which to look at the ways power operates in the world and see how it can be transformed.  Here Sen discusses how her approach to social justice filmmaking has grown more open-ended and relational since her initial involvement in the early 1990s, and emphasizes the need for collaboration between artists and academics in times of crisis.

Scholar activist Davis defines feminist research in terms of dismantling power, promoting change, and responding to the needs of participants, and shares what it means to be a public professor and an intersex ally. 

Alondra Nelson sits down with FRI for the initial installment of the "What is Feminist Research?" Interview Series during a visit to UC Davis on November 1, 2017.  Nelson acknowledges how feminist research has benefited from preceding generations of feminist studies, and speaks to the necessity of an ethical commitment to social mission and community partnership in the practice today.        

On November 1, 2017, Alondra Nelson—professor of sociology at Columbia University and president of the Social Science Research Council—visited UC Davis to share her work on science, technology, and social inequality.

Nelson is the author of The Social Life of DNA: Race, Reparations, and Reconciliation after the Genome (2016), and Body and Soul: The Black Panther Party and the Fight against Medical Discrimination (2011) as well as two edited anthologies.  

Michelle Murphy is Professor in the History Department and Women and Gender Studies Institute at the University of Toronto, Director of the Technoscience Research Unit, and co-organizer, with Natasha Myers, of the Toronto Technoscience Salon.

Shobita Parthasarathy, Associate Professor of Public Policy and Women’s Studies at the University of Michigan, a co-founder of Michigan’s Science, Technology, and Public Policy program, and Faculty Affiliate in the Feminist Science Studies program.
